BACKGROUND: Fight for the future, a national conference for young workers, was held in Adelaide this year.

The conference aims were twofold:

“To bring young workers from all over the country together, so that they can share their experiences and hear how the Federal Government’s Industrial Relations legislation is impacting on young people”, and
“To provide examples of young people who are making a positive contribution to their workplace, school and community through campaigning.”

It was well attended with 85 Registrations received, 30 from students from 7 Public High Schools. Delegates and Officials from 16 unions — ASU, ETU, QPSU, AEU, TWU, AMWU, AMIEU, SDA, CPSU (SPSF), NUW, IEU, LHMU, CPSU, MEAA, CFMEU FFPD, FSU, Unions WA, Queensland CTU, ACTU as well as Delegates from WA, QLD, NSW, VIC, Tas and SA and Representatives from legal centres and community organizations.

The conference program was modelled on Anger — Hope — Action, with plenary sessions focussed on story telling, youth participation and campaigning to create change.

One of the recommendations to come out of the conference was that a National Conference for Young Workers be held every year, rotated between the State Labour Councils. Conference participants from Victoria indicated a willingness to stage a conference in Melbourne next year.

This means we’ve started planning! If you’d like to be involved, contact us today!

JJJ journalist Steve Cannane recently paid us a visit in Melbourne to talk about young workers and unions.

Steve interviewed the YUN Co-ordinator as well as UNITE Secretary Anthony Main, ACTU Secretary Jeff Lawrence and LaTrobe Your Rights at Work campaigner Katie Hall, to find out why only 11-14% of workers under 25 are union members.
